Beautifully bound in cloth, The Folio Society’s edition of The Pre-Raphaelite Tragedy explores some of the movement’s most significant works. Artist, writer and art historian William Gaunt shares his extensive knowledge of art and art theory, through his particular passion for Victorian art.
The silk cover features an image of Pia de’ Tolomei, Gabriel Rossetti’s painting of Jane Morris, William Morris’s wife – with whom he was having an affair. The Arming and Departure of the Knights, the tapestry designed by Edward Burne-Jones and woven by Morris & Co.
I love coffee-table-style books, such as this, which you can pick up at your own leisure and dip in and out of. From thumbing through the stunning imagery, to exploring the lives of some of the key players – Dante Gabriel Rossetti, William Holman Hunt, John Everett Millais, Edward Burne-Jones and William Morris, among others, I’ve enjoyed learning about the people behind the art work.
